Berbatov believes his former Red Devils teammate Ronaldo and Messi shouldn’t be candidates for the FIFA Best award.

Dimitar Berbatov reckons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi only made the podium for the FIFA Best award because of ‘business and the PR agents’.

Two-time winner Ronaldo and Messi, who won the award for the first time last year, were selected in a three-man shortlist for the 2020 prize alongside Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski last week.

In Berbatov’s opinion, Lewandowski deserves to win his first-ever FIFA Best award after undeservedly missing out on a maiden Ballon d’Or.

But the former striker, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United in the 2008/09 season, reckons his old teammate and Messi don’t deserve a spot in the three-man shortlist.

“I’m surprised Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are among finalists for the FIFA Best award as I’m not sure they deserved to be there,” Berbatov told Betfair.

“I think they should give it to Robert Lewandowski. It would be unfair if he didn’t win it. I think it was unfair the Golden Ball didn’t happen this year as he was my favorite and a lot of people’s favorite.

“I think he should have got that award and hopefully winning the FIFA award will be compensation.

“But sometimes unfortunately football is about business and the PR agents have more say in these decisions behind the scenes than many people realize.

“For me, Lewandowski is up there with the best strikers in modern football. This is a subject about which nobody can agree. Harry Kane, Messi, Ronaldo, and Sergio Aguero have been scoring goals for many years and are among the best.

“There are others but, for the way he plays the game and moves around the pitch, Lewandowski is in my top three strikers. He is great.”
