Luis Enrique singled out David de Gea after he put a strong performance in Spain’s Nation League stalemate against Germany.

Jose Gaya’s late equalizer helped Spain salvage a point against Germany but it was David de Gea who made sure the opponents don’t put the game to bed early in the match.

De Gea made a stunning seven stops to ensure that Timo Werner remains the only scorer for Joachim Low’s men at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Thursday night.

The 29-year old was the difference-maker for his side and was handed the Player of the Match award, but that has hardly been the case for him in the past season.

The Spanish shot-stopper made several high-profile mistakes with Manchester United in 2019/20, most notably in the FA Cup semi-finals against Chelsea that saw United get eliminated.

Fans and critics alike turned against him with calls of Dean Henderson, who impressed during his loan spell at Sheffield United, to be given a chance as the club’s No.1.

Luis Enrique insists he has no doubts about De Gea’s quality as he demanded more praise for the former Atletico Madrid man.

“When De Gea makes a mistake we always make a big deal out of it, so when he plays like this we should be hailing him,” Enrique said post-match, as per Goal.

“It would be great to see him on the front page saying ‘What a great keeper we have!’ but since that won’t happen I am saying it.

“Sadly it is his cross to bear, every time he makes a bit of a mistake it is on all the TV shows.”
