Werner vows to start scoring goals again

Timo Werner says he has learned from his recent goal drought and is eager to start scoring much more regularly for Chelsea.

Timo Werner is aiming to hit a prolific run in front of goal for Chelsea from now until the end of the season.

The German joined the Blues from Leipzig last summer and started life in west London brightly.

However, Werner soon hit a snag and found goals hard to come by. He famously went on a 14-game Premier League run without scoring from November through February.

He ended that barren spell with an instinctive finish against Newcastle earlier this month. The German forward recently described the goal-drought as the worst of his career and has once again opened up on that spell.

A run of 14 league games without a goal is the longest Werner has gone in his career without finding the back of the net. The Chelsea forward reveals what it was like during that period.

“It was tough for me because I want to help the team,” Werner told Football Focus.

“I want to score, it’s in my nature, I am a striker.”

“I never had it in my career before.”

“You can always learn more from the bad situations. I learned to trust in myself, to give everything on the pitch, not only think about goals and fight for the team.”

“Now I hope this period is gone and I score a few more goals until the end of the season.”

A trip down memory lane will show how Didier Drogba struggled for Chelsea in his first season but went on to become a legend at the club. Werner is hoping to draw some inspiration from strikers who started slow in the Premier League and went on to be lethal finishers.

“A lot of good strikers come to the Premier League and take one year to settle down and adapt,” he added.

“I think my form is going up and getting better and better. Maybe this year is not the year of goal scoring for Timo but at the end I will reflect on the season.”

“I have learned a lot. I know exactly the teams we play against, how they play.”
