The Chelsea striker has opened up a little on a big concern he had before Tuchel replaced Lampard as the manager.

Timo Werner admitted he feared the worst over Chelsea’s top-four hopes in the Premier League towards the end of Frank Lampard’s spell in charge.

A 15-match unbeaten run between October and December moved the Blues into the Champions League last-16 and right into the thick of the Premier League title battle. In fact, they briefly became league leaders at the beginning of December.

In that same month, however, the club’s fortunes drastically declined. They lost five of their last eight league games under Lampard, slipping down to eighth place in the standings.

But Chelsea have since enjoyed a four-match unbeaten run under Lampard’s replacement, Thomas Tuchel.

“If we go back three or four matches, when the manager was not yet here, we were nine or ten points behind the top four,” Werner told Chelsea’s 5th Stand app, via Football London, after the club’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Sunday.

“We watched the table and were like, ‘oh, it might not be so good at the end of the season’. Now we are really good, back in shape, and I think if we keep going like this we can put more pressure on the other teams.”

Werner played a decisive role in both Chelsea’s goals in the 2-1 win against Sheffield United.
