Chelsea extended their winning run under Thomas Tuchel to three games following a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

A resurgent Chelsea have risen to fifth in the Premier League after sealing a third straight win under Thomas Tuchel at Sheffield United.

Mason Mount and Jorginho’s goals proved just enough as Antonio Rudiger’s own-goal nearly proved to be costly.

Earlier in the day, fourth place Liverpool were beaten 4-1 by Manchester City. It means the reigning champions may soon have to start looking over their shoulder.

Chelsea had a scare early on but were lucky to see VAR come to their rescue. A clumsy challenge from Ben Chilwell on Chris Basham saw referee Kevin Friend point to the penalty spot.

However, the video replays showed Basham was offside and it was ruled out for a Chelsea free-kick instead.

It was the Blues who dominated the first half with way above 70% of possession. They were rewarded with a goal shortly before the break.

The Blades were level after 53 minutes when Antonio Rudiger poked the ball past Edouard Mendy. However, their hopes of a point or perhaps a win did not last long.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty, given after a VAR check, after Ramsdale brought down Werner and Jorginho calmly converted the spot-kick.

The Blues never looked like losing control of the game after going back in front and held on to the 2-1 win.

Chelsea now sit just one point adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool on the standings. Thomas Tuchel will be aiming to oversee another win when the Blues welcome Newcastle to Stamford Bridge for their next Premier League outing.
