Wasteful yet again in the FA Cup 4th clash, the German sharpshooter appears to have lost his scoring touch ever since his transfer.
Frank Lampard has backed Timo Werner to regain his goalscoring touch after the striker missed a penalty in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory Luton Town on Sunday.
Werner was brought down inside the box as he ran onto the ball after a lovely defense-splitting pass by Mateo Kovacic, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.
The striker then squandered the fine chance to get on the scoresheet as his weak attempt was saved.
It marked yet another underwhelming performance for the Germany international who has found the back of the net just one time in his last 16 games for Chelsea.
The former RB Leipzig struck 35 times 45 appearances in total in 2019-20 but has struggled in front of goal ever since his €53 million move.
“With Timo I’m disappointed for him. He gave a lot to the performance today. He was a threat behind, his link up with Tammy, his link up with people around him, it’s just one of those things,” Lampard said after the match, via Goal.
“When it’s not going for you quite, it can happen. I missed penalties, I know the feeling. I know he will feel despondent, maybe now and the last few minutes of the game, but he shouldn’t be.
“It’s my job and his teammates’ job to lift him and he will be fine. It was almost a sign of what’s going on for Timo at the minute, it’s not quite dropping for him, but there will be a time when he takes penalties without thinking about it and hits the back of the net without thinking about it.
“At the moment that’s not quite the time for Timo, but it will come and hopefully soon.”
