Timo Werner revealed Frank Lampard is hard at work trying to bring Chelsea on level pecking with Manchester City and Liverpool.

Lampard had a decent first season in charge of Chelsea by ensuring a top-four Premier League finish despite FIFA’s transfer ban and heads into the 2020/21 campaign aiming for his first trophy as manager.

The Blues boss may have won his fair share of plaudits, but an FA Cup final defeat and a Champions League last-16 exit ended last season on a sour note.

He has already welcomed five fresh faces to the fold this summer in Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, and Thiago Silva. While Kai Havertz is expected to follow shortly.

This boost in manpower should serve Chelsea well in their hopes of the new season, with many hailing Lampard’s capture of Werner.

The 24-year-old is a famed goal specialist in his native Germany following a prolific spell for RB Leipzig and will test his mettle in the Premier League upon completing a €53m summer move to Chelsea.

It didn’t take long either for Werner to make his mark, having scored in last week’s 1-1 friendly draw against Brighton.

And now the former Stuttgart man has opened up on his new life under Lampard and how the Englishman is aiming for the very top.

“The work with the manager recently has been really good,” Werner told the club’s website.

“He’s been showing and explaining to the whole team, not just me, what we can do on the pitch and how to improve on last season.

“He’s been great to work with and he’s been discussing his plans for the future, and how we want to battle with teams like Man City and Liverpool.

“I think Chelsea is a big club and with this team that we have, I think we can reach a new level. We have some very good players here and the manager is there to show us the way and help us improve.

“We’ve worked a lot on tactical things, as well as our strength and fitness, to make sure we are ready for the start of the season.”

Werner is set to make his Premier League debut on September 14 in Chelsea’s season opener away to Brighton.
