As a way to explain the issue, Arsene Wenger revealed what Thiago Alcantara has taken away from Liverpool since he arrived at the club.
When Liverpool signed Thiago Alcantara, Jurgen Klopp believed he could make some modifications to the Reds’ style of play. The familiar Rock N’ Roll style of play from all of Klopp’s squads was sacrificed when the gaffer decided to use Thiago. As a Barcelona product, Alcantara’s style is very different from what Klopp usually presents in all his squads. Losing all the chaos and verticality was a given with the new arrival.
For Arsene Wenger, Jurgen made a mistake by thinking he could make Thiago adapt to Liverpool’s system. Since Klopp decided to use this player instead of other footballers with less technical ability, Liverpool’s approach drastically changes as a result. Maybe getting Thiago more used to this system will take longer than expected. But in the meantime, Wenger believes the Reds might keep struggling.
Wenger makes a perfect analysis of Thiago.
In his analysis, Arsene Wenger touches on a constant problem some managers tend to encounter when they add new players to the roster. As an example, this also happened to Diego Simeone when he brought other stars to play for Atletico Madrid.
“Thiago Alcantara, for me, shows the typical problem of a manager,” Wenger told beIN SPORTS. “For example, Liverpool were very hungry and aggressive in midfield. When you’re manager you want to make the team better and you [sign] a technical player.
“But when you [sign] a technical player you lose the aggression in midfield and you destroy a bit of the strength Liverpool had before. They have certainly less capacity today to win the ball back and they suffer a little bit more, so sometimes when you want to improve the team, you take a little something away from the team.”
