Arsene Wenger has named his dream candidate to succeed Mikel Arteta one day, but only after the current Arsenal manager wins the Premier League.

Arteta has picked up the pieces from Unai Emery’s failed spell as Wenger’s successor and reversed Arsenal’s fortunes, resulting in an FA Cup and Community Shield triumph.

The former Gunners skipper’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Wenger among many to praise his efforts. They’ve been so good, in fact, that the Frenchman is hopeful of a first Premier League title since 2003/04.

But while suitably impressed with Arteta, he hopes to see Thierry Henry manage the club one day as well.

The Arsenal record goalscorer has struggled to live up to the heights of his incredible playing career as a manager following a dismal spell at AS Monaco. He is currently coaching Montreal Impact in the MLS.

Quizzed on a Q&A for The Guardian on whether he hopes to see Henry emulate him one day, Wenger said: “Well, I wish.

“I hope that Thierry Henry is successful in his career as a manager, and if he’s successful as a manager he might one day come back to Arsenal.

“But I especially wish that we go back to win the championship before that happens.

“For example, now we have Mikel Arteta in charge, why should we not do it? A club is about identity.

“Identity is about values and values are about the people who carry these values. And so it’s important there is continuity on that front for me.”
