One of the world’s best players spoke wonders about Lionel Messi and the impact he has in world football. Praise from the highest order.
Even though Lionel Messi has gotten praised all over the place throughout his career, this is not just any kind of praise. Having one of the best players in the world right now saying such wonderful things about you must be humbling. We are talking about Robert Lewandowski, the man who can beat him for FIFA’s The Best Award on December 17.
Robert spoke to Diario Ole ahead of this ceremony to touch on everything he’s done over the last 12 months. Few players in history can brag about having a year like Lewandowski just had in 2020. Not even a global pandemic could prevent him from the level of success he reached.
With Bayern Munich, the striker won the treble and possibly all six titles from the natural year if he wins the Club World Cup. Winning The Best would be the cherry on top for possibly the best year of his entire career. But he needs to beat players like Leo Messi first.
Lewandowski thinks Messi is unique.
During the interview with Ole, Lewandowski spoke both about Leo Messi and Diego Maradona. The Polish striker wasn’t alive when Diego won the 1986 World Cup (he was born in 1988) but he knows how important Maradona is for football history. However, he faced Leo many times during his career and he is still in awe.
“Messi is a great player, one of the best in football history. I know the expectations surrounding him are enormous and nobody might ever get to where he got as a footballer. It’s possible we might have to wait 100 years for another player like him to be born. With what he already accomplished, he is and will remain one of the best ever.”
