Ahead of the upcoming FIFA The Best Awards, Lothar Matthaus knows exactly the player he will support to take the prize home.
FIFA’s The Best Awards are right around the corner and Lothar Matthaus already knows which player he will support. With Bayern Munich’s fantastic treble-winning season, it was obvious the former player would support one of the Bavarian squad’s players.
However, options are varied for the prize and Matthaus had to pick. The final choice appears to be between either Manuel Neuer or Robert Lewandowski but the Polish striker has a huge advantage. Throughout 2020, the former Borussia Dortmund star has been the most consistent player in the world without question.
In fact, he’s been considered one of the best strikers in the world for many years. But ‘Lewi’ could finally get past the threshold in order to become the best player, period. The year 2020 has been the one in which Lewandowski surpassed all the other players in any aspect. Matthaus has no doubts about who should win the upcoming FIFA The Best Award on December 17.
Matthaus sees Lewandowski way above the rest.
During an interview with FIFA.com, Lothar Matthaus revealed his excitement for the Polish striker: “For me it can only be Robert Lewandowski. It’s clearer than it’s been in recent years. He won every title, scored lots of decisive goals and was top of the scoring charts. He’s got everything you need to give a player this award.
“Nobody comes close to him, neither in Germany nor in Europe. It would be a miracle if it’s not him. He’s now got qualities that set him apart even more than before. He works for the team and has become a real winner, someone who leads from the front and also tracks back defensively.
“He’s never been as good as he is now. He lives in a professional way, prepares himself meticulously, and is never injured. That’s why it’s remarkable that he plays almost every game, and does so at the highest level.”
