Going from a statement made by Carles Puyol about his past, we take some time to imagine him playing at AC Milan during his prime.
Carles Puyol is arguably the best centre-back in Barcelona’s history, but we can also imagine him playing for a historic AC Milan side. You know, the Rossoneri managed by Carlo Ancelotti that reached three UEFA Champions League finals during the ‘2000s. Very few will deny that’ squad was arguably amongst the most powerful in the world at the time.
The defensive line they had was absolutely unbeatable but adding Carles Puyol might’ve made them even stronger. To those who don’t remember, that squad had Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, and Cafu as the base. They were never able to find a proper defender who could accompany these three for an extended period of time. Despite this limitation, they still dominated Europe for a long time.
This is how we move to Carles Puyol’s latest comments about the time when he nearly left FC Barcelona to play with the Rossoneri. An offer came at the beginning of the ‘2000s decade, which was an uncertain time for Carles. The Catalan defender wasn’t able to establish himself with the Blaugranas yet, but he decided to rule out an exit.
Puyol’s AC Milan revelation.
Carles recently revealed the time when he refused to play at AC Milan, he attended a ceremony organized by Gazzetta dello Sport. Puyol revealed he would’ve been extremely happy to play next to Paolo Maldini because he is one of his biggest examples to follow.
“I could have joined Milan,” said Puyol last weekend via Football Italia. “It would’ve been great to play with Paolo Maldini, he was my idol. I would have been happy to close my career in Italy.
“There were offers from English and Italian clubs, but when your club is also your home you don’t feel like wearing another shirt. I’m convinced that the Rossoneri will once again be as big as they used to be, even though they are now going through a difficult time.”
This idea of Puyol as a Rossonero will remain as one of the greatest mysteries in football that we will never solve. He already is one of the world’s greatest defenders ever. But the idea of watching him play next to some of the greatest Italian defenders in history is simply too hot to handle.
