After a hard-fought comeback against Sheffield United, Liverpool extended their unbeaten run at Anfield Road in historic fashion today.
After today’s victory against Sheffield United, Liverpool’s undefeated record at Anfield goes all the way up to 62 matches in the Premier League. That’s a record very few clubs in the world can brag about and Klopp’s boys have it after a hard-fought match against the Blades.
In fact, the visiting squad scored the initial goal of the evening through Berge after Fabinho committed a foul inside the box. It was the early minutes of the game and Liverpool already had to come back from a disadvantage. Fabinho proved he is not a centre-back with this foul, which might be a recurring theme without Van Dijk this season.
Bobby pulled one back for the Reds with five minutes left in the first half after Sadio’s rejected header. This is Firmino’s first goal of the season through a tap-in that gave the Reds. With the momentary equalizer, Jürgen Klopp decided to give Diogo Jota some much-needed playing time from the start and it paid off.
Klopp’s impressive front four.
Despite not having much fortune during the first half of the game, we got to see a glimpse of Jürgen Klopp’s offensive plans for this season. He did say he would attack the title this season rather than defend it. With this in mind, he lined up Jota next to his starring front three and the experiment paid off during the second half.
After an initial disallowed Salah goal due to an off-side, Jota scored a header that extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 62 games at Anfield Road. It should be interesting to see which club in the Premier League will have the fortune of winning for the first time in so long at that stadium. But they still have a long way to go in order to reach Chelsea’s record.
Under Jose Mourinho, the Blues completed an 86-match unbeaten run between 2004 and 2008. If our math is correct, Klopp’s boys are still 24 games behind but this number is not too shabby at all. This victory leaves the Reds in second place of the table, just behind Everton.
