A video of a goalkeeper being humiliated shows why Guardiola may not be using Ederson to take penalties.
Manchester City have missed eight penalties since the start of last season, so why not have a change in penalty-taker?
Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, and Ilkay Gundogan have each missed from the 12-yard spot this season alone. The latter’s miss against Liverpool last weekend, in fact, prompted Pep Guardiola to suggest he could use goalkeeper Ederson instead.
“When I commented on this six months ago, it was a joke. Now it’s a half-joke,” the City manager admitted after the 4-1 win on Sunday.
“I will consider (whether) this will not be a joke and he will be a taker. We don’t have a real specialist in this area.”
But Hans-Jorg Butt is perhaps proof of why Pep should probably stick to his joke.
The former Bayer Leverkusen keeper had a memorable moment in 2004. He buried a penalty-kick into the back of the net against Schalke but left his own goal unguarded as he celebrated his goal – leaving Mike Hanke an open invitation to equalize from the halfway line.
I guess this is why Pep doesn't let Ederson take penalties 😅
