Germany’s second-tier Holstein Kiel have knocked the European Champions out of the DFB Pokal at a penalty shootout.

This is exactly why we love football. There’s no greater pleasure than seeing a small, modest club take on a giant like Bayern Munich and come out victorious.

Holstein Kiel managed to tie the game in the most dramatic fashion after their midfielder Hauke Wahl scored a late goal in the 95th minute. Bayern were unable to secure the win on extra-time and had to go through a penalty shootout to ensure their stay in the German Cup. However, the unexpected occurred as Marc Roca missed his chance in the penalty mark. The party began in Kiel as Bartels scored a goal that will go down in the club’s history.

Bayern Munich hadn’t been knocked out by a second division side since 2004. This Wednesday night’s shocking elimination was Flick’s second loss in a row with the treble winners. There is no doubt that it will be a happy night in the town of Kiel as their team goes on to face Darmstadt in the Round of 16.
