A video has emerged showing how Harry Maguire disagreed with teammate Marcus Rashford over the incident that led to Martial’s red card.
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is facing some backlash from his own fans after his reaction in the wake of his side’s 6-1 defeat to Tottenham.
The latest criticism from the Old Trafford faithful comes after their captain failed to agree with Marcus Rashford over Anthony Martial’s red card on Sunday.
The Frenchman was sent off against Tottenham after being caught on VAR striking Erik Lamela in the face.
However, the Argentine could be accused of provoking the reaction after appearing to do the exact same to Martial.
Referee Anthony Taylor showed a straight red to the United striker whereas Lamela was only handed a yellow card.
Footage of the situation nearby has emerged, revealing the full conversations between the officials and players. In the midst of it all, Maguire initially took a stance watching from afar.
Rashford was particularly not pleased, demanding a similar punishment for Lamela for the same crime.
A video posted by United Zone shows who chose to be on the other side of Rashford’s words.
Of all people, it was United captain Maguire appearing to disagree with the forward.
After Taylor only gave Lamela a yellow, Rashford said: “Why? It’s the same [as Martial’s offence]?”
Maguire replied: “It is not violent conduct. They have checked -“
Before he could finish, Rashford replied: “He has elbowed him!”
The centre-back retorted: “They have checked and said it is not.”
A more incensed Rashford said back: “How?! How is it not?!
Some United fans were vexed about the whole incident and made their feelings known about Maguire.
Given how former United captains Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic or Wayne Rooney might have reacted in this kind of situation, we can’t blame the fans for feeling this way at Maguire.
