A journalist asked Andre Silva a rather unusual question about Cristiano Ronaldo during his first press conference as an RB Leipzig player.
Andre Silva got more than he bargained for during his first press conference at RB Leipzig on Friday.
The Portuguese striker, who joined the Bundesliga club from Eintracht Frankfurt in a €23 million deal this summer, was officially presented as a Leipzig player to the German media.
The reporters threw the usual questions at him such as how he is settling in, what made him join Leipzig, and his future targets. But one journalist took things a step further – perhaps a bit too far.
“You know Cristiano from the [Portugal] dressing room,” the reporter asked Silva as quoted by TJ Sports USA.
“He’s a handsome guy. Do you want to be as good as he is and get his muscles one day? And does he smell as good as he looks?”
A clearly bemused Silva replied: “I only smelled his perfume!”
He then added on his Portugal teammate: “Cristiano Ronaldo is above all else.
“He did exceptional things in his career and it is an achievement to be able to play alongside him. What he achieved is incredible.
“In the end, everyone goes their own way and I will try to go mine. I will try my best and if I can even be just a little bit as successful as Ronaldo then that’s great.
“With or without his perfume!”
Of course, Silva has been compared to CR7 during his career, especially during his early days. In fact, Ronaldo once dubbed him as his successor in the Portugal national team back in 2017.
Things haven’t quite gone to plan since then, with Silva having struggled to live up to his potential at AC Milan and Sevilla. Since heading to Germany in 2019, however, things have improved. The 25-year-old has scored a superb 40 goals in only 57 Bundesliga games in the last two seasons.
He even finished fourth in last season’s European Golden Shoe race and just two points behind the third-placed Ronaldo.
Silva now hopes to continue his fine form in Germany by helping Leipzig challenge Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title next season.
