Official: Van Gaal appointed new Netherlands manager

Less than a week before his 70th birthday, Van Gaal has been handed the managerial reins of the Dutch national side for a third time.

Louis Van Gaal appointed has been appointed as the new Netherlands manager, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced on Wednesday.

Van Gaal replaces De Boer as the helm after the former stepped down from his position following the Netherlands’ disappointing Euro 2020 campaign.

The Oranje came out of the group stages with maximum points but crashed out of the competition in the Round of 16 after a 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic.

Appointed on an initial one-year deal, the former FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United man will oversee the Dutch side’s remaining three World Cup 2022 qualifying matches.

“Dutch football has always been close to my heart and national coaching is in my view a key position for the further advancement of our football,” an official statement on the KNVB website quotes Van Gaal.

“Moreover, I consider it an honor to coach the Dutch national team. There is little time for the next qualifying matches, which are immediately crucial for participation in the World Cup.

“The focus is therefore immediately 100 percent on the players and the approach. After all, I was appointed for that. It is good to be back in Zeist.

“By now I have already I have spoken to a number of players and the technical staff has been put together with the KNVB. I am very much looking forward to getting the job done together.”
