Getafe president Angel Torres has indicated that Mason Greenwood is unlikely to return to Manchester United next season, with expectations high for the forward to continue his tenure at the Spanish club.
Greenwood, 22, embarked on a season-long loan to Getafe from Manchester United in September amidst a tumultuous period for the player. He had been under investigation for a possible attempted rape, which was later closed by prosecutors. Additionally, Greenwood faced allegations of controlling and coercive behavior and assault relating to a woman, leading to his absence from United since January 2022.
According to Torres, Greenwood’s future at Getafe appears promising. Speaking to Radio Marca, Torres revealed that Greenwood, his family, and the club are inclined towards extending his stay for another season. However, Torres noted that Manchester United might entertain offers for the player, suggesting that a permanent departure is plausible.
Greenwood’s time at Getafe has been productive, with the young forward showcasing his talent on the pitch. He has scored eight league goals and two in the Copa del Rey, earning praise from fans and coaches alike. Torres expressed confidence in Greenwood’s continued contribution to Getafe’s success, indicating a potential extension until at least January.
While United’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, previously stated that no decision had been finalized regarding Greenwood’s future, club sources suggest a permanent departure remains the likely outcome. The 22-year-old has amassed 10 goals and six assists in 32 appearances across all competitions for Getafe this season.
Interest in Greenwood extends beyond Getafe, with clubs like Barcelona and Atlético Madrid reportedly expressing interest in securing his services. However, Barcelona’s pursuit has diminished over time.
Despite initial concerns, Greenwood and his family have acclimated well to life in Spain, with any apprehensions about hostility dissipating. Their positive experience adds weight to the likelihood of Greenwood’s continued presence at Getafe.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Greenwood’s future remains subject to speculation. Yet, with his flourishing form and contentment at Getafe, the prospect of an extended stay in Spain seems increasingly probable.
