Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes the Premier League champions shouldn’t panic after yesterday’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.

The 2020-21 campaign in England began with the Community Shield clash between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup holders on Saturday afternoon.

The first silverware of the season ended up in Arsenal’s trophy cabinet, as the Gunners defeated Liverpool on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in the regular 90 minutes.

Liverpool’s defender Virgil van Dijk believes his teammates shouldn’t panic after the defeat though, noting that the Reds were the better team.

“I think their main chance was the goal,” said van Dijk via Daily Mail. ‘”It was a good finish but we should have done better there and shouldn’t have let him come onto his right foot, but obviously he finished it off.

“During the whole game we played well, dominated, pressed them well and created many chances. Obviously in the end penalties is just a lottery and anything can happen.”

“We are disappointed but we have to move on. Last year we lost on penalties as well and we won the league so we shouldn’t panic, but obviously we wanted to win today,”

“We had a massive chance with Millie, obviously my disallowed goal and a couple of dangerous moments but if you look at the game as a whole I think we created many chances that we should have done better maybe.”
