Jurgen Klopp’s ambitions of starting the 2020/21 season with silverware were thwarted by Mikel Arteta’s young guns.

Premier League champions Liverpool went into the Community Shield fixture against Arsenal with their preferred eleven. Mikel Arteta did not have the same luxury but his side managed to get the job done.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for the Gunners. The Arsenal captain bet Alisson Becker from outside the area to give his side the lead in the 12th minute.

Aubameyang received the ball on the left-wing from Bukayo Saka and cut inside. His curling shot gave Becker no chance and the Brazilian could only pick the ball out of his net.

The Gabon international paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman in his celebrations, with the Wakanda Forever symbol.

Liverpool huffed and puffed but could not make anything from their superior possession. Arteta’s low-block was effectively shut the Reds out for the duration of the fixture.

Takumi Minamino restored parity in the second half. The Japanese sent the ball past Emiliano Martinez as the ball stumbled to his feet.

Arsenal held on to dear life in the final minutes. The Gunners were under pressure from Liverpool who failed to add to their tally.

The match went to penalties as both sides could not be separated in regulation time. Rhian Brewster missed from the spot in the shootout to hand the Community Shield to the North London side.
