Donny van de Beek became Manchester United’s first signing of the transfer window but could have joined Premier League rivals Tottenham.
Ajax Amsterdam finally allowed Donny van de Beek to leave. The Dutch giants kept the midfielder in their ranks but were resigned to losing him in the current transfer window.
Manchester United are the lucky team to secure the 23-year-old’s services. He arrives at Old Trafford below his transfer value for €39 million.
However, the move could have fallen flat had the Nijkerkerveen native listened to Netherlands’ teammate Steven Bergwijn. The Tottenham attacker wanted him to play in North London.
Tottenham’s attempt to hijack the bid did not bear fruit as Van de Beek had already made up his mind.
“Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs,” 101GreatGoals quoted the midfielder. “But I chose United.”
“I felt ready for the next step. This was the time to go. That is why I was on the phone with my agent last weekend. In the end, there was an agreement.”
The new United signing replaced Bergwijn in Netherlands 1-0 win over Poland. The Premier League duo will combine again, hopefully at the same, as the Dutch side take on the tough Italians.
