New Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek reveals Dutch teammate Steven Bergwijn tried to convince him to sign for Tottenham.

If Bergwijn was way better at convincing, Van de Beek just might have signed for Tottenham.

The 23-year-old completed his £40m switch to United last week and became the club’s first summer signing.

Van de Beek didn’t come all that easy. The Red Devils had to ward off interest from the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal.

Tottenham were also in for the midfielder and Jose Mourinho’s side even made a last-ditch attempt to hijack the move from United.

In the end, Van de Beek joined the Manchester side and reveals how Dutch teammate Bergwijn tried to get him to join Spurs.

“I have to say that he just sent me a message: ‘Are you coming to us or not?’ said United’s new signing to Algemeen Dagblad.

“We often have contact. We used to play together at Ajax for a long time and have actually always kept in touch.”

“I think we will see each other again soon. But I chose to join United. It’s a fantastic step, and I think now is the right time.”

Berwijn and Van de Beek will now see themselves as rivals when the new Premier League season kicks off next weekend.
