In what could be considered the surprise of the evening, the UEFA Midfielder of the Season Award didn’t go to a Bayern Munich player.

It’s safe to say that Bayern Munich is one of the most overwhelming squads we’ve ever seen, their midfielder department was packed with talent. However, there is one player who is not a Bavarian star amongst the mix. Kevin De Bruyne has been considered one of the best midfielders in the world for some time now. But his accomplishments last season were simply outstanding.

The Belgian magician already won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award, which was a prelude to tonight’s prize. De Bruyne was nominated next to Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Múller, both players from the reigning champions. One could easily understand if any of them would’ve won the award, but De Bruyne certainly deserves it as well. Stats-wise, he’s been the most prolific player in the creative aspect of the game. He’s been the one with the most assists in the Premier League and the rest of the competitions.

De Bruyne’s 2019/20 season in numbers.

With 23 assists and 13 goals, Kevin De Bruyne was one of the most prolific players in Europe without question. He was involved in a total of 38 goals out of 48 matches played for his squad. However, the most important aspect of his game is the influence he has on the club’s creative aspects. The Belgian has an average 6.5 decisive passes per game and the competition isn’t close to him.

Only in the Premier League, the second player with the most incisive passes average was David Silva (5). Kevin also leads the way in chances created with 136 throughout the 2019/20 season. Jack Grealish trails behind him with 96 in the Premier League. So yes, Kevin De Bruyne does deserve to win this award because he simply is the best midfielder in the world. Thiago Alcantara might have something to say about that next season, but for now, he has to stand up and clap.
