Just before the UEFA Champions League draw, we finally know who is the best goalkeeper of the 2019-20 season. We aren’t surprised.

The awards coming from UEFA is the other reason to take a look at the draw that is taking place today in Geneva, the goalkeeper award was given today. Just before the Champions League draw started, they announced the first award of the evening. It’s no surprise to anybody that Manuel Neuer has been recognized as the best goalie of the previous season.

The German is amongst the most important players from the powerful Bayern Munich squad that dominated the competition with a perfect season. A great deal of that streak came thanks to the many interventions from Manuel throughout the whole season. There are saves that are basically worth titles from Neuer against the best clubs in European football.

The Bayern captain remains a dominant force in a new season and should be important for his club in the upcoming competition. In the last month, Neuer made a couple of key saves in the Super Cups on the domestic and continental fronts. This is a well-deserved award to a goalkeeper who literally has no opposition right now.

Neuer lost the UEFA Player of the Year Award.

Due to his position, Manuel Neuer is not as fortunate as other players who are also nominated for the big award of the evening. The goalie shared the podium for this award with Kevin De Bruyne from Manchester City and teammate Robert Lewandowski. He had no chance against the Polish striker’s 55 goals in 46 matches throughout the season.

However, Neuer completely deserves to be part of the nominees for this award. Getting the goalkeeper of the season prize should be good enough for Manuel during an era in which goalkeepers no longer get recognized with the major recognitions.

The first, last, and only keeper to get an award like this is legendary Russian goalie: Lev Yashin. Congratulations to Manuel Neuer for this award.
