Following the failure to sign Paulo Fonseca, Premier League side Tottenham have found a new target to replace Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham are believed to be in talks with Gennaro Gattuso after the failure to sign Paulo Fonseca. Following Jose Mourinho’s departure, the former Roma boss had agreed to fill the shoes of his national buddy. It was expected that the Portuguese tactician would become the new manager of the north London club this week. But the deal has been crumbled to nothing and Gattuso has become a prime target.

After verbal consent, Fonseca was ready to take control of things at Tottenham. He spent the last week in Italy making plans for the new Premier League campaign alongside new director Fabio Paratici. Yet somehow, negotiations have come to an end and the club is now focused on the freshly parted Gattuso. The Italian left Serie A side Fiorentina on Thursday morning just 23 days after settling to take the job.

Why did Gattuso make that decision?

According to Goal, the reason behind Gattuso’s sudden change of heart is the availability of the hot seat at Tottenham. Jorge Mendes, who is the agent of the former Fiorentina boss is at the centre of all the negotiations. Moreover, his decision to quit might be influenced because of disagreements with club owner Rocco Commisso over potential transfer subjects.

In fact, now it seems like Tottenham will soon announce the appointment of Gattuso as talks have reached a further phase. The Premier League club is on the verge of ending their two-month search for a replacement for Mourinho. Club Chairman Daniel Levy was hunting for possible options such as Erik Ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino, and Antonio Conte. But as it stands, it seems like Gattuso might win the race to the Tottenham managerial position.
