Tottenham announce their second summer signing

Less than a week after Ivan Perisic’s arrival, Spurs have couped another free transfer deal.

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Fraser Forster on a two-year contract until June 2024.

It’s the second signing Spurs have announced in a week, after confirming Ivan Perisic’s arrival from Inter Milan for free on May 31.

Forster will formally join the Lilywhites on July 1 on a free transfer once his contract with fellow Premier League side Southampton has ended.

The 34-year-old’s arrival coincides with the end of Pierluigi Gollini’s season-long loan spell in north London. The Italian goalkeeper will return to his parent club, Atalanta, this summer.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for me’

Forster brings a wealth of experience with him to Antonio Conte’s side. The 6ft 7ins stopper has kept 42 clean sheets in 134 Premier League appearances, all of which came with Southampton.

He has also played for Celtic, Norwich City, Newcastle United, Stockport County, and Bristol Rovers in his career.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” Forster told the club’s website. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me. When a team like this comes along, it’s impossible to say no. I couldn’t get here fast enough to get it done.

“Everything about the place is world-class. The stadium is probably the best I’ve ever been to – ask any player in the Premier League, and that’s what they’ll say. The training ground is unbelievable, to be able to come here and work, and work hard… I’m very privileged. It’s an opportunity I’m very grateful for.

“It will be a fantastic season, fantastic to have Champions League football, obviously, important to have got that, and now having achieved that, I’m sure the Club will want to go as far as they can in the competition. I’ve played almost 50 European games, so if I can come in and help in any way possible, that’s what I’ll be looking to do.”

Forster, who has won six caps for the English national team, will provide cover for first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and possibly compete for the No.1 jersey at Tottenham next season.
