The 17th match of the 2022 Allsvenskan Season will commence on the weekend of 6th August, 2022, when the English Premier League and other major leagues in Europe will kick-start games for the 2022/2023 season.

Allsvenskan is Sweden’s professional men’s football league. It features 16 teams, with each team playing a total of 30 games every season. A typical Allsvenskan season commences at the end of winter (late March/early April). It ends in November, making Allsvenskan one of the leagues in Europe that begins and ends within the same year.

Allsvenskan odds are some of the choicest odds for football bettors. This is because most bettors do not select odds from the Swedish league. They’d rather prefer to pick odds from the popular leagues. Still, the popularity of the league does not matter as much as the reliability of the odds released by bookmakers.

Many football fans are familiar with top footballers from Sweden. Zlatan Ibrahimović, Henrik Larsson, Freddie Ljunberg, Anthony Elanga, Victor Lindelof, Martin Olsson, Pontus Jansson, Emil Forsberg, Dejan Kulusevski, Marcus Berg, Ola Toivonen, are some of the popular football names from Sweden that are known around the world. Still, very few people outside of Sweden know about Allsvenskan.

History of Allsvenskan

Allsvenskan is Sweden’s top-tier football league. It was founded in 1924 and is one of the oldest football leagues in Europe. Allsvenskan is in its 97th consecutive season. While other leagues in Europe were impacted by World War II, Allsvenskan was not interrupted in Sweden. When Allsvenskan began in 1924, it operated a 12-team league format. However, in 1931, it became the decider of the league that produced Sweden’s football champions.

In the 1959 season, the modalities of the Allsvenskan season were changed. The league schedule was designed to commence in Spring. It was also designed to be concluded within the same year. As the league grew, more teams started to come onboard. This prompted an expansion in the league’s size to 14 teams in the 1970s.

The 1980s were a spectacular period for Allsvenskan. Initially, play-offs were used to decide the league winner, but by 1990, Allsvenskan adopted the 3 points for every win.

The league’s structure did not witness major changes with the turn of the new millennium. Still, in 2008, it was further expanded from 14 teams to 16, which has been maintained ever since. Every team plays a total of 30 games in an Allsvenskan season; 15 home games and 15 away ties against other teams in the league. The bottom two teams are relegated to the lower Superettan, and the top two teams from Superettan are promoted to Allsvenskan.

Allsvenskan operates under UEFA like most European leagues, currently occupying the number 23 rank among UEFA’s league coefficients. Allsvenskan champions qualify for the UEFA Champions League while the 2nd and 3rd best teams and the Svenska Cupen (Sweden’s domestic cup competition) winner qualify for the Europa League. Teams from Allsvenskan participate in UEFA Club competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and the most recent, UEFA Europa Conference League.

The Current Contenders for Allsvenskan Cup

The biggest winner of Allsvenskan is Malmö FF. Malmö FF has won Allsvenskan for a record 22 times. AIK and IFK Göteborg are the other two giants that dominate Allsvenskan alongside Malmö FF. Altogether, the three teams have 53 Allsvenskan titles between them.

Allsvenskan is a highly competitive league. The number of points accrued by the eventual winner pales compared to winners of other European leagues. In the 2021 season, the league was decided based on goal difference after Malmö FF and AIK finished on 59 points.

The current season is still unfolding with Djurgåden at the top of Allsvenskan standings, as of game week 16, at 33 points. Only three points separate Djurgåden from Malmö FF who are currently in 5th. With 14 games left to play in the season, the 2022 season appears to be one of the most competitive for the Allsvenskan league in recent times.

Every team from number one to seven on the current Allsvenskan league table has a good chance of winning the cup. The crunch half of the season is underway. This is the period where most teams will cave in, and the real contenders will deliver strong performances on a back-to-back basis.

The next couple of games will separate the serious teams from would-be contenders. The top three teams, Malmö FF, AIK, and IFK Göteborg, are in contention, but some teams will slug it out with them down to the last day of the season.

Right now, the race to the Allsvenskan cup for 2022 is really close. With 14 games left to play, there will be a lot of upsets in the coming games.

Conclusion

The second half of the Allsvenskan season is underway. Right now, teams are in a battle to finish, and will need their fans to rally around them. Malmö FF is still in contention for the UEFA Europa League group stage. But with their fans behind them, playing in Europe will not affect their chances of winning the Allsvenskan.
