The 10 most expensive African players in football transfer history have been ranked, with stars such as Salah and Mane making the list.
Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe is the most expensive African player in football history. Victor Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille last summer, ranks second on the list, with Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez rounding off the top three.
Pepe comfortably sits on top of Transfermarkt’s list of the most expensive Africans of all time. The Ivory Coast international completed a club-record €80 million move to Arsenal in 2019 from Lille. He hasn’t always matched expectations in London but showed promise at the end of last season.
Pepe’s Arsenal teammates Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) and Thomas Partey (Ghana) also made the top 10 list, having joined the London club from Borussia Dortmund for €63.8m and Atletico Madrid for €50m respectively.
Paris Saint-Germain’s new boy Achraf Hakimi also made the cut. The Moroccan full-back recently completed a €60m move from Inter Milan to move up to sixth place. In fact, Hakimi and Osimhen are the only two non-Premier League players on this list.
Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, narrowly pipped Liverpool teammate and Senegal captain Sadio Mane into ninth place.
