Chelsea’s new superstar striker Timo Werner shares similar qualities to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, says Kevin Phillips.

Werner opened his Premier League account last weekend by scoring a brace in Chelsea’s draw with Southampton. He also chipped in an assist for Kai Havertz in the club’s third goal of the game.

The German striker, who arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer for €53m, has now taken his overall tally up to three goals and two assists in seven appearances across all competitions, but is aiming for better.

Nonetheless, Werner has already made a positive impression to life in English football with Phillips among his many admirers.

The former Premier League striker, who famously won the European Golden Shoe with Sunderland in 1999/00, has even compared the 24-year-old’s qualities to what Henry exhibited at Arsenal.

Phillips told Betfred: “I think he showed his class in his goal [against Southampton] where he flicked it over the keeper and headed it in, other players would have panicked in that situation.

“It’s fantastic, he’s got the ability to drop deep. He reminds me a little bit of Thierry Henry where he’s able to drop deep, drive at players, drop the shoulder and finish.

“He’s an exciting player. [Kai] Havertz as well looks really exciting.”

Werner will hope to be on the scoresheet again for Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
