The time for a change at Manchester United beckons as Henderson’s chance to impress Solskjaer has finally arrived.

Michael Owen believes David de Gea’s injury may permit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘the perfect opportunity’ to name Dean Henderson as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper.

De Gea has been between the sticks at Old Trafford ever since his €25m arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2017. He’s made 417 appearances, kept 146 clean sheets, helped the club win seven trophies, and won a Premier League Golden Glove award.

But the four-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year has been a shadow of his former self in recent seasons, making several high-profile mistakes in games to cost United valuable points.

Solskjaer has stood behind De Gea, though. The United boss has started him in goal in all of this season’s Premier League games and three times in the Champions League, leaving Henderson benched.

Although the Spaniard sustained a knee injury in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Southampton, which may hand Henderson a run of games in goal to prove his worth.

“If you are thinking about changing the goalkeeper, this is the time,” Former Red Devils striker Owen told Premier League TV as quoted on TEAMtalk.

“I don’t think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants confrontation, I don’t think he wants to drop him.

“But in this situation, all of a sudden, ‘hey, you went off injured and he has done nothing wrong’.

“It is the perfect opportunity. If he had any of those thoughts over the last few months when mistakes were made, now is your time.”

The latest reports, however, have claimed De Gea trained at United’s Carrington complex and could still play against Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s Champions League match.
