The reason PSG might sell Neymar and Mbappe after all

After another Champions League elimination, we need to talk about the reason PSG might sell Neymar and Kylian Mbappe after all.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were already getting their stuff together to possibly leave during the summer transfer window. When both of them arrived at PSG, the idea was to sell them a chance to win the UEFA Champions League together. After four years, this hasn’t happened and their contracts are about to expire. None of the two best players PSG has been able to make a giant difference when the time came to win trophies. As pressure kept piling in, the plan was for other clubs to come making offers for these two players.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi had a plan to retain both players until after 2022, but that could only happen if PSG won the title. Having a winning side can convince any player to stay because they are attracted by successful projects. In PSG’s case, they haven’t been able to get to their destination and the pressure on their futures keeps mounting. There is only one possibility they might not leave their clubs and it has to do with pride from the French club’s owners.

This is a recurrent problem that PSG players encounter at the club when they attempt to leave the institution. It happened before with players like Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti, or Thiago Silva when he was in his prime. If he chooses to do so, Nasser Al-Khelaifi can very well decide to prevent them from leaving this summer. However, he might allow them to leave the club if he gets to sign another top player such as Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

We know Neymar wants to play with the Argentine again but he seems like he won’t move from Barcelona. Mbappe’s case is more complicated for the chairman because he gave his word that he could leave after a certain period of time. Everything that happens at PSG this summer will strictly depend on what the club owner decides with these two players. It will also be interesting watching which new star might arrive at the club.
