After a player who was expected to leave in the summer started performing better, Erik ten Hag has been asked to say sorry.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag owes Harry Maguire an apology, according to Tim Sherwood.
Despite facing a potential transfer away from Manchester United and losing the captaincy in the summer, Maguire resolved to stay and prove his worth.
“He was getting shoved out the door and you could see that the manager was trying to edge him out but he didn’t want to leave,” Sherwood told William Hill.
“He probably looked around the dressing room, saw how flaky the other players in his position were and decided that he’d eventually get some minutes.”
With injuries affecting other defenders of late, Maguire has seized the opportunity. The defender has started in each of United’s last three games. He showcased his abilities in Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen by scoring the winning goal.
“Sometimes you need character, heart, and personality to play at Old Trafford, and he has all of those,” Sherwood said.
“He might not be the greatest, but he’s certainly not the worst.”
“I think he will play a lot more now,” the former Tottenham and Aston Villa coach added.
“I think Erik ten Hag owes him an apology.”
Maguire has made six appearances for United this season, including four in the Premier League. The 30-year-old has started four times. He will hope to stay in the line-up when Manchester City visit Old Trafford on Sunday.
