The Man Utd boss gave his latest verdict on Andre Onana after the €52.5 million summer signing had another difficult game.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has backed Andre Onana to come good, stating the goalkeeper can become one of the best in the world.
On Tuesday, United’s dismal start to the season hit a new low. They suffered a 3-2 home loss against Galatasaray, despite holding a 2-1 lead at one stage of the Champions League game. The defeat marked their worst beginning to a campaign since 1986.
At the center of United’s downfall was Onana, who made a critical error for the second game running in the Champions League.
Yet, Ten Hag, who coached Onana at Ajax, came to the Cameroonian’s defense in a post-match press conference.
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre,” the Dutchman said at Old Trafford.
Backing Onana’s potential to rise to the top, Ten Hag continued, “He was in one semi-final of the Champions League. Last year, he was in the final of the Champions League, [and] he has the capabilities to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“He has shown that, and he will do.”
‘We already have seen his great capabilities’
Onana joined United in the summer for a €52.2 million fee after starring in Inter Milan’s run to the Champions League final in the previous season.
10 games into his Red Devils career, he has conceded 18 goals and kept just three clean sheets.
“We already have seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made mistakes,” Ten Hag added about Onana.
“He will bounce back, and I am sure he will in the coming games as well.”
Onana will hope to prove Ten Hag’s faith in him is well-placed on Saturday when United play host to Brentford in a Premier League match.
The Red Devils will enter the showdown intent on snapping out of a two-game losing streak.
