A brace from Luis Suarez was enough for Atletico Madrid to edge Eibar and extend their lead at the top of La Liga.
Once again, Luis Suarez was the hero of the day as Atletico recorded a comeback 2-1 win against Eibar on Thursday night.
An unlikely name in goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic opened the scoring for Eibar from the penalty spot in the 12th minute.
The Serbian goalie made no mistake and sent Jan Oblak the wrong way after Yannick Carrasco had clumsily brought down Yoshi Muto.
After much dominance on the ball, Atletico got their equalizer and it came through that man Suarez.
He got on the end of a loose ball from a tight angle after Marcos Llorente had chased down an Eibar clearance.
Eibar goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic made a number of saves to keep his side in the game and it looked like the match was primed for a draw.
There was drama late on as Eibar defender Arnaiz Arbilla stuck out a leg on Suarez in the box as he went through on goal in the 89th minute.
The Uruguayan stepped up to score a cheeky penalty which was his 11th goal of the season.
With that, he became level on top with Lionel Messi in the La Liga goal-scoring charts.
On a personal level though, the brace meant Suarez has now scored at least 10 league goals for the past 10 consecutive seasons, as per Squawka.
It is also not ‘confirmed’ yet but he might have as well been the first Uruguayan to score 500 professional goals in club colors.
Suarez is the fastest Atletico signing to score that many goals in well over a decade, and he is already proving to be a key figure in their title charge.
With the victory, Atletico Madrid are now seven points clear at the top of La Liga with a game in hand to go with.
