The former Barca striker opened up on how the club treated him and Messi during the summer of 2020.

Luis Suarez has said that the way Barcelona dealt with him and Lionel Messi in the summer of 2020 brought them to tears.

After six splendid years at Camp Nou, Suarez found himself surplus to requirements in 2020. The previous club board pushed him to leave, going as far as forcing him to train alone. Messi, meanwhile, sent them a transfer request via a burofax.

“I went. I showed up to train, and they sent me to train separately,” Suarez said on Star+ Qatar.

“I suffered a lot and came home and cried because of how they had treated me. It hurt me.

“It was also a message that they wanted to leave Leo alone, separate him. We had nothing to do with it, it was a mess at the club. We had a bad time, and Leo suffered a lot. I had never seen Messi cry like I saw him cry at Barcelona. It hurt him.

“I always had that uncertainty as to why it all happened, but then luckily I was happy at Atletico Madrid.”

Both forwards have since left Barcelona. Suarez now plays for boyhood side Nacional in Uruguay, two years after swapping Barca for Atletico Madrid. Messi left the club last year when his contract expired to join Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

Barcelona return to action on Sunday at home to Celta Vigo for their next LaLiga match.
