The Atletico Madrid striker has entered the Spanish league’s history books by breaking a record held by none other than Ronaldo.

Luis Suarez has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the best start with a new La Liga club after 17 games.

The Uruguayan, who joined Atletico Madrid from Barcelona in September, took his tally up to 16 goals in only 17 league games for Diego Simeone’s men by scoring a brace in Monday’s 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo.

According to Opta, Suarez has made the best start of any La Liga player in his first 17 games for a new club in the 21st century.

The previous best was set by Ronaldo in 2009/10. The Portuguese scored 15 goals in as many matches for Real Madrid after completing a then world-record €94m transfer from Manchester United.

Suarez, meanwhile, also moved three goals clear of former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi to lead the Spanish league’s goal charts.

The 34-year-old previously won the Spanish Golden Boot, otherwise known as the ‘Pichichi Trophy’, in 2015/16 when he scored 40 goals in only 35 games for Barcelona. He also won a second European Golden Shoe that season.
