England boss Gareth Southgate has shared what is a sour update on recently injured Liverpool star Joe Gomez.

Injuries have not been kind to Liverpool this season and it continues to plague their season. The latest Anfield star to join the treatment table now is defender Joe Gomez.

The Reds have suffered multiple injury blows this term with the likes of Fabinho, Matip, Thiago, Alisson, Alexander-Arnold all suffering injuries at some point. The compounding blow to it all was the long-term injury suffered by Van Dijk after he damaged his anterior cruciate ligament.

The latest injury to Joe Gomez means 13 different Liverpool players have been injured this term. It comes as a blow given that he suffered an injury only in training on international duty.

England boss Gareth Southgate has given an update on the player and it doesn’t look so good.

“I can’t tell you how serious it is because he’s yet to have scans,” he said as quoted by talkSPORT.

“What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain and the fact was there was nobody around him when the injury happened, so I didn’t like that element of it.”

“But we’ve just got to wait and see what the scans show and we’re all hopeful for him that it’s not what it might be.”

“But it’s not a good situation. I don’t see him being involved in the games with us, that’s for sure.”

There are fears already that Gomez could also be set for a long-term layoff and Gareth Southgate hoped that would not be the case.

Asked if he feared Gomez could have sustained an ACL injury, Southgate said: “We’re all hopeful for him that it’s not what it might be.”

“We can’t speculate on the exact nature of the injury. It’s not possible until we’ve seen scans.”

“So, as I say, my immediate thoughts are with him because he’s had some difficulties with injury in the past, so we’re hoping as much as we possibly can and praying that it’s not going to be a long-term one but we just have to see.”
