Son Heung-min bagged an incredible quadruple to seal Tottenham a sensational 5-2 win at Southampton.

Southampton and Tottenham met at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon in search of three points. Both suffered defeats in their opening fixtures of the new Premier League season, meaning the pressure was on to deliver.

Despite adding Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon to their ranks on Saturday, Spurs had to make do without their new high-profile signings. Not that they needed them anyway, though.

Jose Mourinho, who made headlines again for leaving out Dele Alli, was given a stark reminder of the quality already at his disposal, with Harry Kane taking less than three minutes to find the back of the net before a VAR review disallowed the strike.

Matt Doherty headed in Son’s wayward cross back into the middle of the box for Kane. The England captain reacted superbly by twisting his body around to volley the ball into the back of the net. However, VAR deemed Son to be fractionally offside.

Southampton, who struggled play at their usual tempo early on, then began to challenge Spurs. Che Adams even forced Hugo Lloris into a brilliant save from 10 yards out after Bertrand’s deflected free-kick found him.

Like their opponents, though, the Saints found themselves on the wrong side of VAR in the 16th-minute. Danny Ings thought he scored the opener, only for the system replays to show the ball made contact with his elbow in the build-up to his goal. The game, therefore, remained goalless.

But the two teams remained undeterred, pushing on in search of that elusive goal. Not even another disallowed goal for Kane in the 27th-minute could deter their efforts.

At the fourth attempt, however, a goal finally stood in Southampton’s favor through Ings; just past the half-hour mark. The former Liverpool striker capitalized on his side’s growing dominance by firing the ball into the far corner from a tight angle.

Son, though, equalized on the stroke of half-time from almost out of nothing. The South Korean latched on to Kane’s pass and rifled past Alex McCarthy at a tight angle before leveling the scoreline.

The Spurs strike duo teamed up again just two minutes into the second-half, with Kane’s through ball sending Son into a one-on-one before cooly putting the ball into the Saints goal.

The 28-year-old completed his hat-trick in the 64th-minute by slotting in Kane’s clipped pass. He then bagged a fourth goal, and a fourth assist for Kane, by cooly chipping in the Englishman’s cross.

Kane later ensured he got his name on the scoresheet himself by scoring eight minutes from time, with Ings bagging a late penalty for Southampton to complete the 5-2 scoreline.
