Manchester United boss Ole Solskjaer has named the crucial period that could all but determine his side’s title aspirations this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United are heading into a “big run of games” that will show whether or not they are title contenders.
The Red Devils responded well to crashing out of the Champions League at RB Leipzig last week but could not find a way past rivals Manchester City in Saturday’s goalless derby draw.
United are sat at the middle of the table ahead of Thursday’s Premier League trip to Sheffield United. That match kicks off a run of six fixtures in 15 days that is shaping up to be as frantic as it is important.
Bruno Fernandes and David De Gea have both claimed United can win the Premier League this season.
Solskjaer believes the result from those games could go a long way in telling whether those claims are true or not.
“This is a big run of games for us. After the Villa game on New Year’s Day, we have a little bit of a break in the league. This period is going to be vital and it’ll be easier for me to answer around that time,” Solskjaer said as quoted by Goal.
“I’d be disappointed if the players didn’t think we can put a challenge up. At the moment, anything goes in the league. There are different reasons for different results. I feel we’re getting better but we have to improve quite a bit to take that next step as well.”
The Premier League is proving to be an unpredictable season so far and many sides have gone top since the start of the season. Solskjaer believes this league is there for any side that can be consistent enough.
“Whoever finds the consistency and the energy will have a better chance than in the last few seasons, because there’s been a few runaway teams,” he added.
“For us, the quicker we can get the game in hand against Burnley played the better so that the league table looks as it should be. Then again, I’m as boring as you alluded to there, you have to take one game at a time.”
“Even though we’ve got six games in less than 16 days, we’ve still got to look at one, then one and then one because if you take your eye off the ball you’ll quickly lose points in games where you expect to take more.”
