Struggling with form and fitness issues, the Frenchman was far from his best last time out.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits “last season was a disappointing one” for Anthony Martial but insists the forward is “coming back strong and hungry” for the new season.

Expectations were high of Martial ahead of 2020-21 as he was Man United’s top goalscorer in 2019-20 with 23 goals while also provided a healthy amount of assists (12).

However, he failed to deliver on those expectations as he managed just seven goals in 36 games across all competitions.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away amid rumors Edinson Cavani, who enjoyed an impressive debut season, has replaced him as the Red Devils’ first choice to lead the line.

Solskjaer, though, is refusing to give up on the French marksman and is confident he can compete for a place in his line-ups.

“Last season was a disappointing one for him and you can see that little bit of grit between his teeth again,” the Norwegian told a press conference on Friday.

“He’s up for the challenge, he’s a Man United player and we’re happy that we have him. He’s proven doubters wrong so many times.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if other teams targeted Anthony because he’s a very, very good player.

“I’ve got no plans for him to play against us. He’s coming back strong and hungry with a determination to prove his fitness, and his quality.
