The Spaniards were lackluster in their opening two matches but were able to hit full gear in their final group stage game.
Spain received a “big boost” after their landslide victory against Slovakia, says Sergio Busquets.
Spain took to the pitch against Slovakia searching for their first win in the European Championship, having been held to a draw by Sweden and Poland.
Luis Enrique’s men had looked lackluster, and an early elimination from Euro 2020 hadn’t seemed beyond the realm of possibility.
It played out differently at Estadio de La Cartuja, however, as Spain were able to find form at the right time and seal an emphatic 5-0 win to clinch a spot in the last 16. Sandwiched between two own goals were efforts from Aymeric Laporte, Pablo Sarabia, and Ferran Torres.
“We didn’t play how we wanted [in the first two games] and today was a boost for everyone,” Busquets, who was named Star of the Match, said, per Goal.
“We did not depend on ourselves to finish first, but surely this will give us strength.
“This is a big boost for all of us, for the players and for the supporters. I think we all needed this. We went out switched on from the start. We missed the penalty but we kept going and the goals came.”
