Diego Simeone is unsure what caused Atletico to perform the way they did last night – their own fallacy or the strength of the opponent.

Atletico traveled to the home of the champions for the opening match of their Champions League campaign.

The Spanish giants did not have the most positive of starts as they were handed a comprehensive 4-0 beating at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Kingsley Coman both opened the closed the scoring, beating Jan Oblak at 28th and 72nd minute. Sandwiched between Coman’s strikes were the goals from Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso.

After the 90 minutes had ended, Atleti had registered their joint-worst defeat with Diego Simeone at the helm. Only on one occasion almost nine years ago had they allowed four goals without hitting back even once.

The Argentine tactician was indeed downhearted after Wednesday night’s results but only chose to focus on the positives aspects of the match.

“I am left with the bad taste of defeat. But I am left with things that for the future will do us very good,” Simeone said post-match, via Goal.

“I do not know if we made too many mistakes or if it was the quality of the opponent. So I am left with the attitude of the team, and until the end, we looked for the goal.

“Bayern are in a great moment, they are a great team. But you have to see the good performance of Hector Herrera, Yannick Carrasco, Marcos Llorente because they will surely add up from now on.”
