Ronaldo is gunning for his first Capocannoniere at the third attempt, but he has at least three direct rivals to beat.

Cristiano Ronaldo tops the Serie A goal charts this season with 16 goals in only 17 appearances. After finishing fourth in 2018/19 and runner-up last season, he is determined to become the Italian goal king this time.

But as impressive as Ronaldo’s stats look, he has at least three direct rivals in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, and Ciro Immobile.

The trio sit on 14 goals each and would love to knock Cristiano off his perch at the top of the Serie A charts – but who stands the best chance?

Who could be Ronaldo’s biggest rival?

In terms of goal-to-game ratio, Ibrahimovic has the best record. The AC Milan striker has taken only 11 matches to score 14 times to average 1.2 goals-per-game. But can he continue this form until the end of the season?

Age isn’t on Zlatan’s side, with his 40th birthday coming up in October. He also suffered a serious calf injury recently and has only scored in three of his seven games back. Milan manager Stefano Pioli will also probably rest him when possible, costing him potential opportunities to add to his goal tally.

Lukaku isn’t looking bad either. The Inter Milan star, like Ibrahimovic and Immobile, sits two goals behind Ronaldo. But he has played the most games and has struggled for consistency lately, having only scored three goals in his last eight league outings.

Immobile, meanwhile, doesn’t have Zlatan’s impressive goal ratio, nor has he scored over one goal in a match this season.

Out of the trio, however, last season’s champion has been the most consistent goalscorer. The Lazio striker has scored a goal in 14 of his 19 games and has been gradually climbing up the ranks in both the Serie A and European Golden Shoe ranks.

So, all in all, Immobile looks like Ronaldo’s biggest threat for the moment.

What do the bookies think?

We say Immobile at the moment due to his consistency, but the bookies feel Lukaku is still worth a tilt against Ronaldo.

According to odds from Bet365, Ronaldo is the strong favorite to win the Capocannoniere. The Juventus ace has a price of 1.80, with Lukaku as the second favorite on 4.00, Immobile in third, and Zlatan in fourth.
