The Dutch striker arrived at Old Trafford on a January transfer.
Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit believes Manchester United and Netherlands deserve to have better No 9s competing with Wout Weghorst.
The Dutchman was playing at Besiktas on loan from Burnley when a winter offer arrived from Man Utd. Cristiano Ronaldo’s mid-season injury forced Erik ten Hag to add a new attacker to his ranks.
The decision came after Weghorst’s impressive World Cup career with Netherlands. But Gullit believes there’s still room for improvement in both Man Utd and Netherlands’ attacking lines.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, the Netherlands legend said: “I always look at him [Weghorst] in a weird way.
“I have a lot of admiration for him. But at the same time I think: he is not good enough for Manchester United and the Oranje. Every now and then you see defects.”
Weghorst has failed to find the back of the net in his eight Premier League appearances for the Red Devils. However, his relentless pressing has, nonetheless, made him a key player in Ten Hag’s attacking setup.
Ronald Koeman didn’t use Weghorst in Netherlands’ 4-0 defeat against France. But the Man Utd striker started for the Oranje in their 3-0 win over Gibraltar, where goals from Memphis Depay and Nathan Ake secured Netherlands’ victory.
