Manchester United have set their sights on a new centre-back option. Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano has now been linked with the Red Devils.
From being quiet of late, there could be a flurry of additions at Old Trafford soon enough. Van de Beek is set to join the Manchester outfit in the coming days.
But there could be more. United are in search of a new centre-back partner for Harry Maguire. Upamecano has been identified as the man to play that role.
As per ESPN, Solskjaer has identified the Leipzig man as a credible option to strengthen his side’s defence.
The United boss wants all his signings done before the new season starts on September 12. Meaning the Norwegian will urge the club to complete this move as quickly as possible.
The report adds that Solskjaer is unconvinced by the current crop of Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling.
Upamecano was one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga last term and was also in the Champions League team of the season.
The 21-year-old was recently rewarded with a new contract which removed an existing £54m release. His new deal is understood to contain a £38m release clause which will only become active next summer.
However, United will push on with negotiations this summer. They believe they can get the deal done.
To help fund the Upamecano transfer, Jones, Rojo and Smalling are all expected to be sold in the coming weeks. Elsewhere, there will be guarantees made about the futures of Lindelöf, Bailly or young Axel Tuanzebe.
Asides United, the trio of Chelsea, Arsenal and PSG have all been linked with the German defender of late.
