Wayne Rooney became the latest manager to react to Chelsea’s decision to dismiss Frank Lampard from his managerial duties.

Former England international Wayne Rooney reacted to the news of his fellow countryman’s sacking at Chelsea. Rooney, a young manager himself, was not too pleased with the Blues’ decision. The Manchester United legend had previously spoken about Lampard’s managerial career as Super Frank joined Chelsea from Derby County in 2019.

“I think it’s brilliant for Frank, but also for any young English players, or players who’ve just finished playing, to see big teams like Chelsea giving Frank an opportunity to prove himself,” said Rooney.

However, Lampard’s opportunity came to a premature end as the young manager was traded for former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel. Rooney, recently appointed as the Rams’ new coach, believes his former England teammate should’ve been given more time at Chelsea. Nevertheless, Wayne had foreseen the Blues’ decision.

“I wasn’t surprised, to be honest. It’s obviously the way Chelsea operate their business and it wasn’t a huge surprise to see Frank get sacked. I think he deserved more time, he’d done a great job last year with Chelsea,” Rooney argued.

Moreover, the manager went on to explain why he felt like Chelsea’s decision to dismiss Lampard was taken way too soon. Rooney hinted that Super Frank’s project was one for the future and that it got shut down earlier than expected.

“He’s brought players in, which will take time to build his team and challenge for titles. I don’t think they were too far away in terms of points-wise from being able to challenge so yeah, it’s obviously disappointing for Frank and his staff. But you asked me if I was surprised and the answer is no.”
