The Scotland international hobbled off the pitch shortly before half-time in the Reds’ penultimate pre-season friendly.

Jurgen Klopp has issued an update on Andy Robertson after he suffered a “pretty painful” injury in Liverpool’s match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Robertson’s agony was quite apparent after he clashed with Alex Berenguer in an attempt to block a cross as he rolled on the ground while clutching his ankle.

Naby Keita, as did the rest of the Liverpool XI, immediately went on to check his injured teammate, who then received lengthy treatment before eventually being carried off the pitch by two physios.

A prolonged spell on the sidelines for the left-back could spell trouble for the Reds, who had their previous season spoiled due to injuries to a number of key players.

“We obviously don’t know in the moment how serious it is,” Klopp said of Robertson, speaking in his post-match press conference.

“It was pretty painful and that’s why Andy went off. You probably saw it on the TV pictures better than we did, but he got the ball, the ball on the front of his foot, [and] twisted the ankle.

“The pain settled already, but we cannot say anything further without further assessment tomorrow. He has to get a scan and then we will know more.”
