Andy Robertson says he is disappointed Liverpool couldn’t close out a win against Everton but was happy to take positives from the game.

Robertson has reflected on his side’s 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Liverpool opened the scoring first but a resolute Everton side were up for the fight. Twice the Toffees came from behind to snatch a late point at home in what was an entertaining Merseyside derby.

Liverpool were denied a late winner after VAR reviewed Sadio Mane to be offside in the build-up to Jordan Henderson’s goal. Even worse, the Reds lost Van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara to injuries as well.

Robertson feels his side should have won the game but takes solace in the fact that they put out a praise-worthy performance.

“It’s obviously disappointing and I think we’ll be the more disappointed team,” he said to the Liverpool website.

“The game was there for us, we created enough chances. We thought we had nicked it at the end and then I think Sadio’s toenail was maybe offside but that’s what VAR brings. Onside, offside, it’s clear, so unfortunately it doesn’t matter the margin, he’s offside.”

“It’s always tough to take when you think you’ve won it and you are that close and things like that. But we take a point and we move on.”

Robertson also shared his thoughts on what has been a controversial topic after Henderson’s goal was ruled out.

“I looked when Thiago played the ball and I thought [Sadio] could be or couldn’t be [offside],” he added.

“But you’ve just scored the winner in the derby – we think – and you can’t not celebrate it. You then just wait for the decision and obviously the referee took a long time over it so we knew it was going to be a close one and usually when they take that long we know it’s sadly not going to go in our favour. Look, it is what it is and we move on from it.”

Liverpool will now turn their attention to the Champions League when they take on reigning Dutch champions Ajax in their first group stage game.
