Declan Rice will walk into any Premier League side and would especially be an upgrade to Manchester United, says ex-Hammer John Hartson.

Declan Rice would come as an upgrade to Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield for Manchester United, says Hartson. The former West Ham star also claims City will be interested in the midfielder as well.

The 21-year-old has seen his stock rise in the Premier League and has taken on captainship duties for the Hammers in the absence of Mark Noble.

For a player of his age and quality, it’s no surprise that a couple of the top sides would be in the running to sign Rice.

Having spent time at the Chelsea academy earlier in his career, a return has been mooted to Stamford Bridge.

Aside from the Blues, Manchester United have reportedly become the latest side to show an interest in the Englishman.

Former West Ham striker Hartson is not surprised to see interest from all over and believes Rice can ‘indeed’ improve Manchester United. He also claims Manchester City could soon join the race for the midfielder.

He told Stadium Astro: “I think he’s better than Fred, I think he’s better than McTominay.”

“[Bruno] Fernandes is outstanding, he’s been Manchester United’s best player in the last 12 months since they bought him. [Paul] Pogba, we’re not quite sure what Pogba is going to turn up – some weeks he’s great, others he is languishing and doesn’t look up to it. I think he would be a great signing for them.”

“Man City? Rodri, Fernandinho – I’m not sure Rodri is the player we expected him to be, his performances haven’t been at the level.”

“I think he walks into those teams. I think Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would love a Declan Rice. I think he is better than those players.”
